Paula,
The Savage is a great beginner bike, it's light, easy to handle, and lots of fun to ride. It is perfect for local, casual type riding, but not for high speed interstate riding. Not that you're going to drop it or anything, but I'd go used for a couple reasons. First, if you screw up and damage the bike, you're not out as much. Second, you won't have as much invested, once you get a little riding time under your belt, you may change your mind on what kind/size bike you want to ride long term. As for safety, just make sure you always wear good helmets. If I go more than a few blocks in town I always wear a leather jacket and gloves. I want chaps for the additional protection, but they're down my list a little further. Do not ride in shorts or anything like that. I've seen people with road rash and trust me, it's worth being a little warm and having proper protective clothing on. Good luck with your decision and on the class.
Ride safe,
Bil
